What is an Arm Lift?
An arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, is a body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fat that hangs from the upper arms, from the armpit down to the elbow. It helps restore a defined contour to the upper arms and will reduce pockets of fat, as the procedure is typically done in conjunction with liposuction of the upper arms. An arm lift does not treat any part of the lower arm.
Aging, heredity, and weight fluctuations are the most common causes of sagging upper arms.

An arm lift is typically done under general anesthesia. The majority of patients will go home the same day. The procedure itself will take between 2-3 hours to complete. Prior to entering the operating room, Doctor Petrungaro will place marks on your arms using a skin pen in order to outline the skin and fat to be removed.
There are various arm lift techniques described. Doctor Petrungaro utilizes a technique that places the incisions on the inside of the upper arms. Incision length and pattern are customized to each individual patient depending on the amount and location of excess skin and fat to be removed. As mentioned earlier, the incision will typically extend from the armpit to just above the inside of the elbow. For those patients with fat deposits in the back of the arms, Doctor Petrungaro will first perform liposuction of this area to accentuate a slender arm profile.
Once the skin is elevated off the inside of the upper arms, it is surgically excised and the underlying tissues are tightened and reshaped as needed with internal stitches. At this point a small drain is typically placed in the surgical wound of each arm in order to allow any fluid buildup to exit the wounds in the postoperative period. The drains are removed in the office in about 1 week. The skin is then closed using absorbable stitches that are deep to the skin. At the conclusion of the procedure, your arms will be wrapped with gauze and ACE wraps from your armpits to your hands to help reduce postoperative swelling.
